Technical Writing

Skill: Analyzing

For these two work samples I had to analyze how a technical process operated and then communicate their processes in the form of how-to guides.  These two examples really represent the first time I worked on projects related to technical writing.

I.  Operating Manual

This was my first user manual and it  pertained to the operation of aquatic IMG_0598pumps.  I was able to take a complex technological process and simplify its operation to potential new lifeguards.

II..Sewing Guide

For the second user manual I explained how to sew a pillow from scratch.  Unlike the first manual, I was unfamiliar with this subject area and had to learn the process from an experienced sewer.  Despite my lack of expertise, I was able to simplify the steps into layman’s terms.  This was followed by conferring with the sewing expert to make sure the manual was accurate.

Skill: Document Design

III.  googe-drive-user-manual

This piece was a collaborative project that involved the creation of a Google Drive manual for the faculty at ODU.  My assigned role was document design and the goal was to keep the design simple in order to convey the information concisely.

Skill: Problem Solving Communication Issues

These two work samples illustrate my ability to independently seek out an existing communication problem and correct it through two different technical formats.

IV. Visual Redesign

For this piece, my task was to learn the benefits of using Microsoft Excel to visually depict data that was collected on crime statistics in the U.S.  The other goal included visually redesigning the data to illustrate more accurate conclusions on the way crime was represented in regional terms.

V.Communication Problem

This is a technical report I wrote on solving a public communication problem in   my community.  I decided to propose changing the no profanity signs at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront since residents and tourists IMG_0603alike were confused at their meaning.  This report required me to take part in extensive research in relation to the city’s ordinances, public opinion, and new sign designs.
